SonarQube is priced by lines of code (LOC), and only the smallest sizes have a public price. SonarQube Cloud Team starts at $34 a month for up to 100K lines, Community Build and the Cloud Free plan cost nothing, and every SonarQube Server edition and Cloud Enterprise is a quote from sales, as listed on sonarsource.com/plans-and-pricing on 29 October 2026.
| Plan | Price | Limit that sets the price |
|---|---|---|
| SonarQube Community Build | Free, open source | Self-hosted, no LOC license |
| SonarQube Cloud Free | $0, no card, no expiry | Private projects up to 50K LOC |
| SonarQube Cloud Team | From $34 a month | Up to 100K LOC; other increments exist but are not listed |
| SonarQube Cloud Enterprise | Annual quote | Per organization; commercial support from 5M LOC |
| SonarQube Server Developer | Annual quote | Per instance, by LOC tier; recommended for 100K+ LOC |
| SonarQube Server Enterprise | Annual quote | Per instance, by LOC tier; recommended for 1M+ LOC |
| SonarQube Server Data Center | Annual quote | Per instance, by LOC tier |
| Open-source maintainers on Cloud | Free | Public, OSI-licensed repositories |

How does SonarQube price by lines of code?
SonarQube licenses a codebase size, not a headcount. SonarSource's pricing page says Server is "priced per instance, per year, based on your lines of code", and that you license each instance, not individual users. The tier is the upper bound of the LOC you want that instance to analyze.
Three counting rules decide which tier you land in. Blank lines, comments and test code are not counted. On Cloud, only private projects count, and for a project with branches only the largest branch counts. The count does not depend on how often you analyze. If an instance reaches its limit, new analyses that exceed the license are rejected, while browsing projects and changing configuration keep working.
How much does SonarQube Cloud cost?
SonarQube Cloud has a free plan and a Team plan with a public price, and Enterprise is by quote. As of 29 October 2026 the Team plan starts at $34 a month for up to 100K LOC, billed monthly by credit card after a 14-day trial, which is $408 a year at that tier. The page says it was previously listed at $65.
The Free plan covers private projects up to 50K LOC with no card and no expiry, and public projects can be analyzed too. Maintainers of public OSI-licensed repositories get Cloud free. Above 100K LOC the Team page says other increments are available but lists no prices, so a 250K or 1M LOC codebase needs a quote, not arithmetic from the $34 starting price. Paid plans are paid upfront for a maximum LOC allowance.
Cloud Enterprise adds SSO and SCIM, portfolios, OWASP and MISRA reporting and zero data retention. Advanced Security (advanced SAST and SCA) needs a separate subscription, and commercial support starts at 5M LOC.
How much does SonarQube Server cost?
SonarQube Server has no public price for any paid edition. The pricing page lists Developer, Enterprise and Data Center, tells you to contact sales, and offers a 14-day trial with no payment needed. Developer is recommended for 100K+ LOC and covers 40 languages and frameworks. Enterprise is recommended for 1M+ LOC, covers 48, and adds AI CodeFix, MISRA C++:2023 compliance and autoscaling.
Standard commercial support is included on Enterprise or Data Center plans starting at 30M lines of code, and costs extra on the other plans. So the cost of Server depends on three things you only learn on a call: the LOC tier, the edition, and whether you need paid support.
What does SonarQube cost for 250K, 1M and 5M lines of code?
Only part of the answer is public. This is what a buyer can price from the vendor's own pages today, with the rest marked as a quote.
| Codebase size | Cloud | Server |
|---|---|---|
| Under 50K LOC (private) | Free | Community Build, free |
| 100K LOC | Team, $34 a month, about $408 a year | Developer, quote |
| 250K LOC | Team increment, not listed, ask sales | Developer, quote |
| 1M LOC | Team increment or Enterprise, quote | Enterprise recommended, quote |
| 5M LOC | Enterprise, quote; commercial support starts here | Enterprise or Data Center, quote |

We did not estimate the quoted cells. Third-party "SonarQube costs $X" figures are not on SonarSource's pages and change by deal, so ask for the number in writing for your LOC tier.
Is SonarQube Community Build free?
Yes. SonarQube Community Build is free and open source, and you host it yourself. SonarSource's pricing FAQ calls it "a powerful, free, and open-source tool" and points to the paid editions for upgrade benefits, without listing Community Build's limits on the pricing page. Check the edition comparison in the SonarQube docs for branch analysis and language coverage before you build a workflow on it, since those are the usual reasons teams move up.
What does SonarQube do well?
SonarQube is the long-standing quality gate for static analysis: rules for bugs, vulnerabilities and code smells, a pass or fail on every pull request, and a dashboard that managers already know. Its LOC pricing is predictable, because a codebase changes size slowly, and a team of 8 and a team of 80 working on the same 500K lines pay the same.
Pick SonarQube when you need a rules-based gate with compliance reporting such as OWASP or MISRA, and a vendor with an established enterprise sales path.
How does repowise price code health?
repowise does not meter lines of code. Plans follow repositories and credits, as listed on the pricing page on 29 October 2026. Free is $0 for public repositories, with two public repos and ten AI answers a month. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, and includes private repositories, auto-sync on every push, security scanning, 5 indexed repositories and $5 of AI credits a month. Teams is $16 a seat a month billed yearly with a 3-seat minimum and 25 pooled repositories.
Credits are real dollars spent only on model work such as AI answers and AI review. The code graph, semantic search, hotspots and ownership analysis never use credits, so scoring a large repository costs the same plan price as a small one. The code health layer scores every file, and the PR bot's Signals mode is free and deterministic, with no model call. AI review is optional and runs on Pro.
Which should you pick?
Pick SonarQube if you need its rule set and compliance reports as a merge gate, you are fine with a sales call for pricing above 100K LOC, and you want the vendor most auditors already recognize.
Pick repowise if you want code health, hotspots, dead code and change risk from one index that agents can query over MCP, priced by repositories instead of lines. The full side-by-side is on the SonarQube alternative page.
Use both if SonarQube is your compliance gate and you want repowise for the questions a rules engine does not answer. For ranked options beyond these two, read SonarQube alternatives in 2026.
How we checked
On 29 October 2026 we read sonarsource.com/plans-and-pricing, its SonarQube Server and Developer pages, and the SonarQube Cloud pricing page. Every SonarQube figure above comes from those pages, and cells marked quote are quotes because the pages list no price. The $408 yearly figure is our arithmetic ($34 times 12). repowise figures come from its pricing page. We did not run both tools on the same repository, so this compares cost, not analysis quality.
FAQ
- How much does SonarQube cost?
- It depends on lines of code. SonarQube Cloud Team starts at $34 a month for up to 100K LOC, Community Build and the Cloud Free plan (private projects up to 50K LOC) are free, and SonarQube Server editions and Cloud Enterprise are quotes from sales.
- What is the price of SonarQube Developer Edition?
- SonarSource does not publish it. As of 29 October 2026 the pricing page says the license is per instance, per year, by LOC tier, and asks you to contact sales. Developer is recommended for codebases of 100K+ LOC.
- Is SonarQube free?
- Partly. Community Build is free and open source, SonarQube Cloud is free for private projects up to 50K LOC, and Cloud is free for public OSI-licensed repositories. Commercial Server editions and Cloud Team above the free limits are paid.
- Is SonarQube Community Edition free?
- Yes. SonarSource now calls the free self-hosted edition Community Build. You run it yourself, and it has no price.
- How much does SonarCloud cost?
- SonarCloud is now SonarQube Cloud. Free covers private projects up to 50K LOC, Team starts at $34 a month for up to 100K LOC, and Enterprise is a quote with commercial support from 5M LOC.
- How does SonarQube count lines of code?
- It excludes blank lines, comments and test code. On Cloud only private projects count, and for projects with branches only the largest branch counts. How often you analyze does not change the count.
- Is SonarQube priced per user?
- No. Server licenses each instance for a LOC tier, and Cloud prices the maximum private LOC you pay for. Adding developers does not change the price, adding code does.
- How does repowise pricing compare with SonarQube?
- repowise charges by repositories and credits, with no LOC meter. Pro is $12 a month billed yearly for 5 indexed private repositories. SonarQube Cloud Team at 100K LOC is about $408 a year, and larger sizes are quotes.
